Psycho is an American 1960 suspense/thriller directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Psycho is considered by some to be Hitchcock's most famous film. The unprecedented violence of the shower scene, the early demise of the heroine, the innocent lives extinguished by a disturbed murderer were all hallmarks of Hitchcock, copied in many subsequent horror films.

SHOWER SCENE

one of the most famous scenes in cinema history, is the murder of Janet Leigh's character in the shower. As such, it spawned numerous myths and legends. It was shot from December 17 to December 23, 1959, and features between 71 and 78 angles (the exact number is unknown). The scene "runs 3 minutes and includes 50 cuts. Most of the shots are extreme close-ups, except for medium shots in the shower directly before and directly after the murder. The combination of the close shots with the short duration between cuts makes the sequence feel longer, more subjective, more uncontrolled, and more violent than would the images if they presented alone or in a wider angle.

Hitchcock directed more than fifty feature films in a career spanning six decades. He remains one of the best-known and most popular filmmakers of all time.

THRILLER GENRE CONVENTIONS
The thriller genre can include the following sub-genres:

Action thriller: In which the work often features a race against the clock, contains lots of violence, and an obvious antagonist. These films usually contain large amounts of guns, explosions, and large elaborate set pieces for the action to take place.

Crime thriller:These films often focus on the criminal(s) rather than a policeman. Crime thrillers usually emphasize action over psychological aspects.

Disaster thriller: In which the main conflict is due to some sort of natural or artificial disaster, such as floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, volcanoes, etc., or nuclear disasters as an artificial disaster.

Drama thriller: These films are usually slower paced and involves a great deal of character development along with plot twists.

Supernatural thriller: In which the conflict is between main characters, usually one of which has supernatural powers.
