EVALUATION OF FINISHED PRODUCTION

As part of our media coursework we had to produce an opening sequence of a thriller. The sequence had to last at least 2 minutes. A blog had to be created that highlighting the process (production and construction) of creating the film as well as research about Thrillers.

(1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Unaware of her villain, the 2 minute clip is about a victim who has been captured due to other events occurring in the past. Victim attempts to runaway from the victim unaware of why she is almost about to be killed. In order for the victim to break free; a collection of text messages, e-mails, letters and code have been set for the victim. The question still remains will she survive!!! The short clip will leave audience in suspence giving showing real media and the forms of a thriller flim.

(2)How Does your media product represent particular media groups?

General research had helped a lot as this helped bring the thriller clip together. My thriller attempts to cover one of twelve of the thriller conventions. Inspiration from world famous directors and producers such as Alfred Hitchcock played a major role in the whole concept of the thriller flim. In doing so I watched Psycho and recognised in great use of film language. This inspired me to feature some of his work into my film. The different types of Thrillers enable me to establish the types of thriller target audiences preferred. Which was important for the making of my film?

(3)What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

After reviewing the results of the questionnaire I came to a conclusion possible media institutions that may distribute my product would be Cinema’s, DVD’s and Blue-Ray. Viral marketing could be another means of distribution because it encourages more individuals to pass on the message about the film; via internet, word-of-mouth or e-mail.

(4) Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for our media product will fall into the 15 and above. The selected target audience was based on knowing what a thriller film is about and leaving the thriller film in suspense. Targeting to a younger audience would be harder as they will be too young to know what is really going on. With an older target audience they will not only watch it but think passively what will happen next making the thriller film.

(5)How did you attract/adress your audience?

Before filming we wanted to come up with ideas of how we wanted to attract the audience. Through the use of storyboard and brainstorming ideas this helped us come up with a solution of the thriller film. Through the use of strong acting, we wanted to portray a realist thriller as possible by over acting and picking a really dramatic editing. Editing we made sure looked effective by adding in different effects to make it look like real media film. The concept was the most the we wanted to address to the audience, we wanted to leave the audience to view it as real life situation.

(6)What have you learnt about technlogies from the process of contucting this product?

Through the use of the technology I have learnt alot. In terms of camera angles and techquies the use of the camera has helped me and the group to contrust the flim. The use of the camera allowed us to shot at different angles this what made it easier to contrust and to control the product. Knowing the different angles and its affect helped contrust the product more easily and freely.

(7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the product?

At beginning this course we done a preliminary task which allowed us to work and get used to different camera techniques and to do a short film clip. The progression can be seen in the thriller film that we have made. The use of the preliminary task helped us in many ways and produced a 2 minute thriller clip which contains different camera angles. Comparing the two video clips shows a huge amount of progress and has put all what we have learnt into practice. In my opinion the preliminary task helped us improve on shooting the media film. Comparing the two shows that there has been a high level of progress with the editing and sound. We had a great time filming the thriller film and hope you will enjoy it.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

CAMERA AND EDITING

After shooting the first part of our sequence we decided to go back to school and edit what we have done. We came together as a group in order to complete the task. In doing so we all had an input to what we felt was good and what was bad.

We were able to resolve them to create the perfect opening sequence. Our editing process involved us uploading our film 'so far' onto the computers. Using iMovie software we were able to cut and copy parts we felt were relevant into our scene.

SOUND

Moby Gratis was the used that allowed me to upload music onto the Thriller. Moby Gratis supports the work of independent and non-profitable film makers. As a student I was entitled to this priviledge and simply signed up to use there music. Moby Gratis has a selection of non-copyright music.

Music Ideas Include:
Aerial
Ana
Brandish
Sighted

CHANGES MADE /PLAN

Previously we watched Danny Boyles 'Slumdog Millionaire' due to the fact that it is a British Film and we are studying the British Film Industry in conjunction with the Thriller genre in Media. We were able to use the movie as inspiration towards our opening sequence.

We also realised that watching films made by Alfred Hitchcock e.g.(Psycho) he limited the amount of characters he used in order to create an intense atmosphere for his audience. It turn we narrowed down the amount of characters from four to only two. Characters include; Christopher Morrison and Felista Kubuka. This will allow the audience to establish who is the villain and the victim.

Previously we had difficulties in finding a location to shoot the opening sequence. In order to prevent this form happening, we decided to use a location/setting that was always avaialbe. The only solution we came up with was to use my house; and thats what we did. This enabled us to add more action and drama to our Thriller.

EFFICENT USE OF ACTORS, SETTING, PROPS

ACTORS
An actor and artress will be featured on the thriller. only 2 will roll play so the audience will understand the concept of what going more if there is less amount of acotrs particpating. Felista Kibuka (myself)and Chris Morrison will both have a lead role in the thriller

SETTINGS
The group and I came up with different setting for the thriller.

This is the stairs setting. The victim will run up these staris to escape the villian.

This is the gravery yard. This was one of the settings that we choose to flim. Due to the change of planning this set was scraped and we decided to flim in a house.

PROPS

The props were kept to a minium. The main props was what the characters will be wearing and the equiment to be used.

This is what the victim will be wearing, she is a teenager so putting simple clothes on her will make her look vunlerable.

The victim will be in all black giving the mysterious look. This look has been created so the killer stays in diguse not showing their true idenity

The knife will be used in the thriller. The killer will using this to try and kill the victim this is a old style kitchen kinfe that will be used.
QUESTIONNAIRE

The questionnaire was to gain a knowledge and understanding about one's opinions towards Thrillers. Results enable us to create film suitable and enjoyable for the target audience. In addition we also had to ensure that the content of the film was suitable for the 15 or 18 certificate.

INITIAL IDEAS

This is the mind map. In this mind map we came up with a list of ideas for the thriller that will be creating. Ideas included, setting, props, makeup, camera angles etc. Any ideas were put across to create the mind map. This will help in the creation for the thriller flim.

STORYBOARD

Me and my group created a storyboard for our thriller. The storyboard will give us a basic idea of the concept of the storyboard. We came up with a rough sketch of idea of the thriller flim. The storyboard will be our guide when coming fliming the triller flim. I have created a short clip of the storyboard and shows the skectches of the concept of the thriller flim.
